Happy Holidays

Hubby, puppy, and I had a great holiday.
I baked cookies Xmas eve,

and Corey ate most of them already.
I dressed puppy up like Santa.

And cooked a large turkey on Xmas. Corey baked yams. We also got to talk to our families.
Sokka got spoiled this year from us and from Corey's family.

After dinner we snuggled on the couch and watched a movie. It was a great day.

mini reviews

I am 37 books towards my goal of 50 in the 2011 Goodreads reading challenge. With less than a month left, I doubt I'll make my goal. I still read a lot of great books this year, and there is always next year to try again. It's not surprising that I fell behind since we had a big move this year and I started a new job. Anyways, here are some of my thoughts on the more recent books I have read: Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1)Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wasn't sure what to think of this book when I picked it up off the bookstore shelf, but I had read great reviews on it and took the opportunity to read it despite my uncertainty. I don't usually read YA. This book surprised me. It had just the right amount of gore and horror without being overly scary. I breezed through this book in only two sittings and only because I was tired the first night or I wouldn't have put it down. I wasn't sure how things would work out in the end and it didn't have a traditional HEA ending, but I feel like things worked out as they should. There were hints at a sequel in the epilogue and if thats true, I'll definitely be picking up the next book.

I love this book! A lot happened and many secrets were revealed from Limos's history and about the apocalypse. Than's story was also set up for the next book and June seems so far away for having to wait. We also learned more about the watchers, Reaver and Harvester. My feelings for Harvester are mixed after her actions in this book, but I feel so bad for how she is abused by Pestilence and her superiors. She can be cruel, but part of her still remembers her days as a true angel. My heart broke for what Arik endured for Limos and how vulnerable she really is under her tough act, which she feels is required from her as a horseman and warrior. Arik and Limos value family and their lies/omissions hurt their loved ones, however, they each learned the meaning of unconditional love and that they had it all along.

This was an interesting and amusing take on Disneys "The Little Mermaid." I was happy to see more of Muffin, who cracks me up every time with her outfits and dialogue. I found myself just as frustrated as Leah with her inability to communicate, and shared her happiness in the moments things were going well for her. I was also angry with Royce at first because of his choice of wording when talking to Leah, but I'm glad that resolved itself the more he learned of her. In addition, I was worried for a while that Leah wouldnt get her happy ending, but things worked out perfectly in the end and just barely in time.

View all my reviews Personal Update: We are so excited for the Holidays. Thanksgiving was wonderful. We had two celebrations. I'm not sure of our plans for Xmas or New Years yet. We have our tree up, presents wrapped, and other gifts shipped to our family in the states. I caved and gave puppy his new toy early. He went crazy with it for like 10 minutes and is now napping, again. I got some pancake mix for Xmas morning and I'm still trying to figure out what to do for dinner that night. Corey votes for turkey, but I want ham. He hates ham, and I only like turkey on Thanksgiving and sandwhiches. I can't find a small enough one of either to make both. Corey claims he can eat a 12 pound turkey by himself. He really likes turkey. I don't doubt him, since he ate 90% of the 7 pound turkey I made for Thanksgiving before the weekend was over. Things are going really well here. The weather is nice. It's starting to feel chilly, but it hasn't dropped below the 60s during the day. I guess we've acclimated. I hope every one enjoys this holiday season. Happy Holidays!

What's new

My motorcycle is all fixed up, I passed the skills test, and my bike is now registered. I rode it for the first time outside a parking lot yesterday and off base today. It was pouring and windy, so I got soaked! But I'm still so happy to finally have my bike and that I can ride it whenever I want. It's lots more fun than a car. But I'll be careful, I promise. :) I bought some rain pants (already have a coat) that should arrive next week, which will make riding in the rain more comfortable. Pictures to come...IF I can talk Corey into taking some for me.

Last weekend, we took our dog to a doggy pool party. We have never seen our puppy swim before so we just tossed him in. He can swim, but doesn't seem to enjoy it. Lol. The entire time we were at the pool, he either clung to me, which left me covered in scratches, or swam to the edge of the pool to try to escape. Corey didn't join us in the pool and watched us from the sidelines. Sokka also got to socialize with the other dogs and owners there. I'm glad to get him out of the house a bit.

I read this in one sitting. No joke. This book was a nice ending to a favorite series. I'll miss not reading my favorite angel, but I'm so happy Georgina got the ending she did.

Wow. I love Larissa Ione's writing and this was no different. However, it was way different from her usual work, and I really enjoyed this treat. I loved the darkness of this story and the sex. For such a short read, there was lots of it! And it was definitely darker than her usual. The ending shocked the hell out of me and i wonder if there will be more to this story...

This book had just the right amount of snark, and I loved the character Abby. However, some instances seemed a little convenient to me when they happened, and that took me out of the story a little. I still read this book quickly because I just couldn't put it down! It really was an enjoyable read, and the story flowed nicely. I was a little heartbroken at the ending.

It's here!

But it needs some work and the parts take 7-9 days to arrive. I got to see and sit on it tho, and my mechanic will drop it off Wednesday night so that I have it for my skills test on Thursday, then pick it up again after and finish work on it. I can hardly wait to see it all fixed and to ride it every day.

And here is a bonus pic of my puppy being adorable.

My first bike!

I just bought my first motorcycle! It will arrive at the end of the week from mainland Japan, then after it is cleaned up by my new mechanic, it will be all mine! So hopefully next week I will be able to get my skills test out of the way and start riding! My motorcycle is a red Kawasaki Balius 250cc. It is mid '90s year wise. I don't know the actual year unless we run the VIN #. I cannot wait for it to get here, but we are also still waiting (for 2 months now) for our house stuff to get here. It is supposed to arrive this week, but we haven't heard anything from the movers. It is ridiculous how long it takes for our stuff to get here, and if it doesn't come before my motorcycle is ready, I can't ride. All of my motorcycle gear, and most important, my helmet are in that shipment.

American Village!

Yes, American Village. We have been here just over 3 weeks now, and our first trip off base to explore was to the American Village in Chatan Town, Okinawa. It's about a 10 minute drive from our base and features a giant ferris wheel and lots of American themed shops and restaurants. Tho we did see some Indian and Asian restaurants in the Carnival Park building. We also visited the Dragon Palace which was nice and air conditioned, with a large dragon clinging to the center rod of the building, it was filled with more shops.

The entire village is an outdoor shopping mall. It was fun walking between the narrow alleys between shops as we window shopped. They were also shaded, so it offered some respite from the sun, if barely the heat. On the far side of the village is Sunset Beach.

We looked around a bit, but didn't have swim suits with us so we didn't get to swim. We plan on heading back this or next weekend to do just that tho. The water is netted off in it's own cove so we don't have to worry about waves or jelly fish. It had a resort feel to it, and shops lined the boardwalk too. I can picture myself visiting often during the next few years.

The Shisa

In Okinawa there are the Shisa. They are everywhere you go; outside of buildings like the BX and commisary, and now in our house too. The Shisa are dog/lion hybrids that honestly looked like dragons to me at first. They are guardians that ward off evil spirits and keep the good ones in. So naturally I bought some for our home. One for the night stand and a larger one for the shelf in the stairway. They also always come in pairs. The one on the right with his mouth open is the one who "scares" off evil spirits, and the one on the left with her mouth closed welcomes the good ones to stay. They can also be bought everywhere that sells somethings. I found several stands in the BX that sells variations of them and some in the BX main store as well. I assume they are as easily found off base.

Ecstasy Unveiled (Demonica, #4)Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love this series. This was a great addition to it. I loved the happily ever after and that a plot from the other books was tied up as well. I didnt like Lore until this book, when we got into his head. Some of my favorite quotes were in this book as well. Especially the "fuck trophy" and smurffette references. There was also some suspence in this book for other characters i had hoped were done with the hardships, but it was necessary. Im looking forward to the Sin/Con story in the next book.

Sokka, end of hotels, and pictures

We have been here just over a week now. We have seen a lot of the base and a little off base, and tried some local cuisine (loved it!). There are some activities we plan on like the newcomers tour that will give us a greater taste of the island, but right now we are still settling. We were finally offered a home on base and accepted it. We also now have a mailing address. My dog made the trip ok as well. That was an adventure, but I'm glad to be reunited with him after a week and a half apart. His quarantine stuff went predictably, but he gets to stay with us during his quarantine period and just can't go off base. Also, because of Sokka's stuff to get over here, I had to go pick him up in Tokyo on my own. I got lost for over 2 hours in the rain, and had a hard time understanding directions by locals who didn't speak fluent English, but they were kind. The guy that helped the most didn't speak any English at all. He held his umbrella over me and walked me to my destination. We were only able to communicate because I had a map someone else had given me (in Japanese), so I knew where to point on it, but couldn't read it.  We should move into our new home this week. It is huge (for us) and older, but they remodeled the kitchen and laundry room with new appliances so it doesn't feel that way. I hear we will appreciate the older housing in a typhoon because they are very sturdy and made of cement. Now we just have to figure what to do with the extra space. It is a 3 bedroom, 2 story duplex. They were out of 2 bedrooms which we are entitled to for being married, so they offered us the 3 bedroom instead of asking us to live off base. With Sokka's quarantine, we have to live on base to avoid putting him in the kennels. I'm really glad this move is finally working out. We have had a rough two weeks with the plane breaking down, then moving hotels/rooms because on base and off base hotels were already booked and we had to squeeze in wherever we could.  In addition to the Tokyo trip. Now, we have yet to find a car, which will be our next goal.

Review: My Life As A White Trash Zombie

My Life as A White Trash Zombie (White Trash Zombie, #1)My Life as A White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Good, light read. I read it during an international flight. It was just what I needed to keep my mind off the cramped seats and long hours. However, I had a hard time getting into it at first. My attention wasn't really caught until the last 70 pages, then I couldn't put it down! I just had to see who her "zombie daddy" was and who was the serial killer. The answer shocked me, even tho I should've seen that coming. lol. It is a perfect book when you want to read something light, like those days on the beach, or during a LONG flight where there will be interruptions.

Paradise

We have made it safely to our new base in Okinawa. The trip was exhausting, but it is really beautiful here. One highlight of the flight was passing Mount Fuji in the plane. We saw the top peeking through the clouds. Driving on the left will take some getting used to, when we get a car. The humidity will also take some adjusting to. But it's nice and warm with great views of palm trees and the ocean. We haven't been off base yet, or taken any pictures. Also, we were lucky to arrive in the evening, so we only had to stay awake 3 hours to go to bed at a reasonable time and avoid jet lag. We still have lots to do here: housing, processing my dog into the country, getting Japanese driving licenses and a car...And the guy sitting next to me on the plane gave me his cold. I already feel like crap and I hope it passes quickly since we do have so much to do.
